Physiotherapy is concerned with prevention, treatment and management of movement disorders arising from conditions and diseases. Physiotherapists use an individual's history and physical examination in diagnosis and treatment, and if necessary, will incorporate the results of laboratory and imaging studies. Treatments may include use of ultrasound waves, manual therapy, TENS machine, and exercise.
Physiotherapy helps restore, maintain and improve movement and physical function of the human body. As primary health care professionals, physiotherapists combine in-depth knowledge of how the body works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability. With your independence in mind, a physiotherapist’s goal is to restore, maintain and maximize your strength, function, movement and overall well-being.
Additionally, physiotherapists work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles. Physiotherapists provide services to individuals and populations to develop maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. This includes providing services in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors. Functional movement is central to what it means to be healthy.
Therefore, physiotherapists apply extensive knowledge of how the body works with hands-on skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.
Guided by the assessment findings, the physiotherapist will develop and facilitate a treatment plan. Aside from the various physiotherapeutic techniques involved in therapy, the treatment regimen may include prescribing assistive devices such as canes, walkers and braces.
Patient education is a key aspect of all treatment plans and your physiotherapist will work with you to develop and better understanding of your injuries and how to heal and prevent them from occurring again.
